Whether you consider yourself a moderate, an independent, or a Republican, there are very specific reasons to support the Democrats.

Fiscal Responsibility:
Despite what the ads may say, the fact is that in the last 30 years, it has been the Democrats - not Republicans - who have reduced the deficit and size of government. The current president has initiated the largest expansion of the Federal Government (discretionary, non-defense) since the New Deal.

Being a responsible steward of tax dollars starts with accountibility - something that has been sorely lacking in a White House that has pushed no-bid contracts and companies that have defrauded America out of billions.

Equality - For All.
No one should be descriminated based on race, religion, creed, color, age, disability, or sexual orientation. Everyone accused of a crime should have access to a lawyer and the right to challenge their imprisonment in a court of law.

Education First
If we want a bright future for America, we must work hard to develop bright American students. Too many have fallen through the cracks as schools remain overcrowded and teachers flee the state for better pay and benefits. Meanwhile, as the State's Republican leadership continues to take money from public education, unfunded mandates from the Federal Government further strain the system. We must realign our priorities to ensure that tomorrow's graduates can compete against the rest of the developed world.

Health Care for All
Regardless of the plan you favor, what is clear is that Americans are being crushed by the cost of healthcare. As tens of millions go without it, many more suffer through outrageous premiums and limited benefits. Meanwhile, the preventative care that children and those in poverty need is being ignored... And leading to serious, costly illneses and deaths that could have been avoided.

Protect the Attacks on Social Security
The efforts by Republicans to undermine the Social Security System and convert it to a privatized system have questionable motives. We must continue to fund the current social security program, and not simply hope that the market cooperates. We must bolster Social Security through revenue and ingenuity - not risk.

Environmental Action
We must undo the damage of what will be 8 years of environmental deregulation and massive polution. Standards - higher in 2000 than today - must fall in line with accepted science. Crisis or not, the reduction of oil consumption and carbon emmissions will make America stronger, cleaner, and more independent.

Accountibility in Government
Americans are entitled to open government. In our own state, legislators keep finding ways to operate behind closed doors... And keep pushing legislation that would allow more doors to be closed.

The more open we are, the more we can accurately gauge the level of influence various players have on the legislative and governing process.

An End to the Iraq War
With Afghanistan unfinished, Iran threatening, and Pakistan unstable, it is more important than ever to reserve our strength for confrontation that directly threatens our security at home. Congress (and if necessary, the next Democratic President) should move swiftly to ensure the swiftest departure from Iraq and disengagement in the Iraqi Civil War.

Homeland Security
Our first responders need equipment, protection, and training. Yet for years, Republicans have obstructed the flow of money to these local agencies. In their first year, the new Democratic majority has implemented the 9/11 Commission recommendations... and more will be done with the next Democratic President.
